Ermelo, situated in the province of Mpumalanga, was initially used by traders making their way between Lydenburg and Natal, and started attracting settlers in the mid 1850's. Today the highveld town of Ermelo is one of Mpumalanga's larger towns, and serves as a busy agricultural centre which features maize, cattle, beans, wool, potatoes, sunflowers, sorghum and lucerne. The region is also home to anthracite, torbanite and coal mining operations, as well as oak, cedar, wattle and pine plantations in the vicinity. Ermelo is situated at the crossroads of three major national highways, the N2, N11 and N17, allowing convenient access to KwaZulu Natal, Johannesburg and Swaziland.
Due to its high altitude Ermelo experiences a mild climate, and usually receives about 625mm of annual rainfall, with most occurring during the summer months. It receives the lowest rainfall in June and the highest in January. Average temperatures in Summer range between 12 and 26 degrees Celsius, and in Winter between 4 and 16 °c.
Property and Development
Government's recent plans of multi-million rand upgrades to the local road infrastructure in Mpumalanga, as well as the re-opening of the Camden Power Station in Ermelo, have resulted in a massive expansion of the local economy, and in return a steady increase in demand for property for sale in Ermelo and surrounding areas. Medical and Educational Facilities
Ermelo Medi-Clinic, situated within the town, offers a wide spectrum of professional medical services. The hospital is the only one of its kind in the region and serves Ermelo as well as he nearby towns of Amersfoort, Bethal, Carolina, Hendrina, Piet Retief, and Volksrust.
Educational institutions in Ermelo include two combined schools, five primary and two secondary schools. Also located in the town is the Gert Sibande Future Education Training College which was formed after the merging of technical colleges of Ermelo, Evander and Standerton in 2002.
Ermelo has a lot to offer its visitors and residents in terms of tourism and recreation. The tow lies along two major tourism routes - the panoramic Cosmos Route, and the Eastern Rainbow Route. Awe inspiring landscapes and scenery, and excellent recreational facilities allow for top notch entertainment and sporting opportunities. Excellent variety in bird and wildlife in the nearby Songimvelo game reserve and Nooitgedacht Dam nature reserve also allow for excellent outdoor pursuits, while the Ermelo Country Club offers a challenging 18 hole course for avid golfers.
